Overview

The food industry spans a variety of processes, including milling, baking, drying, mixing, packaging, and bulk material handling. From flour production to spice grinding and confectionery manufacturing, many operations generate fine dust particles. Ingredients such as flour, sugar, starch, and seasonings are common sources of dust, which can become airborne during handling, processing, and storage. These particulates not only pose health and safety risks but can also compromise the quality and purity of food products.

Challenges & Considerations

Regulatory Compliance: Food manufacturing is subject to stringent health and safety regulations, including those from agencies like OSHA and FDA, requiring effective dust control to meet standards

Explosibility: Certain food dusts, such as flour, sugar, and starch, are highly combustible and pose a significant risk of explosion in processing facilities

Cross-Contamination: Airborne particulates can mix, leading to contamination that affects product quality and violates food safety regulations

Health Risks: Dust from ingredients like flour and sugar can cause respiratory issues for workers when inhaled over extended periods.

Stainless Steel Construction

With all the strict regulations placed on the food industry, we’re able to provide stainless steel construction options to meet SOME standards. Often times we will recommend alternative design solutions to help reduce the expensive requirements.

Explosion Venting & Supporting Calculations

The food industry often deals with some of the most volatile and explosive dust particles (such as sugar), we’re able to provide the calculations to determine explosion venting requirements.

Anti-caking Features

Many of the dusts collected in the food process having caking or “sticky” features. To help ensure the dust is properly filtered and emptied, we can offer anti-caking filters to prolongue their lifespan. If the material is prone to solidifying, we can offer heat tracing on units placed outside.
