Overview
Plastics manufacturing encompasses a wide range of processes—extrusion, injection molding, thermoforming, grinding, blending, and pelletizing—all of which generate airborne dust and fumes. Common sources include plastic granules, regrind material, additives, and colorants. These particulates can be fine, fibrous, or sticky depending on the resin type (e.g., PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene) and processing method. Without proper dust control, these materials can compromise air quality, contaminate products, and create hazardous working conditions.
Challenges & Considerations
Worker Health: Inhalation of plastic dust and fumes—especially from heated or chemically treated resins—can lead to respiratory irritation and long-term health risks.
Product Contamination: Dust settling on molds, dies, or finished products can cause defects, discoloration, and quality control issues.
Static Electricity: Plastic dust is prone to static buildup, which can attract particles to surfaces and increase the risk of ignition or equipment malfunction.
Continuous Operation: Many plastics facilities run 24/7, making system reliability and minimal downtime essential for maintaining production schedules.
Environmental Compliance: Facilities must meet strict air quality and emissions standards, especially when handling volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hazardous additives.
Cyclone Pre-Filter
Plastics can be quite abrasive, especially for facilities running 24/7. By utilizing a cyclone before the dust collector, you can extend the lifespan of your equipment and filter bags. Our cyclones can be fitted with AR-400 material for maximum wear-resistance.
Explosion Venting
Explosion venting provides a controlled release path for pressure and flame in the event of a dust explosion. Instead of allowing the force to rupture the collector or surrounding equipment, vents open rapidly to relieve pressure, minimizing structural damage and reducing downtime. Optional features includes:
- Burst sensors to shutdown the equipment.
- Deflector plates to direct pressure upwards.
- Flameless vents, capable of being utilized indoors or high traffic areas.
Anti-static Features
While there exists a variety of anti-static industry features synonymous across dust collection such as equipment and ducting grounding, we can offer a variety of extra features such as utilizing anti-static filter media or full length copper grounding wire.
