Overview
Pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing involves processes such as tablet pressing, capsule filling, coating, blending, and packaging—all of which generate fine, airborne dust. Common particulates include active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, coatings, and powders used in formulation. These dusts are often extremely fine, potent, and sensitive, requiring strict control to protect workers, maintain product purity, and meet regulatory standards.
Challenges & Considerations
Potent and Hazardous Dusts: APIs and fine powders can pose health risks if inhaled or cross-contaminate other products.
Strict Regulatory Compliance: Facilities must meet FDA, OSHA, and GMP standards for air quality, containment, and worker safety.
Cross-Contamination Risks: Even trace amounts of dust can compromise product integrity, especially in multi-product facilities.
Ultra-Fine Particulates: Pharmaceutical dust can be submicron in size, requiring advanced filtration to capture effectively.
HEPA After-Filters & Broken Bag Detectors
Implement secondary safeguards to ensure harmful chemical dusts are properly filtered. We can supply and install HEPA housing units on the return ducting line to capture even the smallest leftover particles. Also available is the particulate detection system, which monitors return airflow to ensure the filtration is working as designed.
Chemical Explosion Suppression
For applications where explosion venting is not preferred (or an option), we can install chemical explosion suppression systems within the dust collector housing and ducting. Utilizing pressure detectors, the system will monitor for any combustion and when detecting imminent deflagration will release suppressing agents to stop the pressure rise. Especially useful in situations where there is not adequate venting space, or the system is within a sensitive area of a facility.
Filter Media Features
In applications with mild moisture elements, we may recommend oleophobic treated filters. Oleophobic filters are highly beneficial in chemical applications due to their ability to repel oils and other low-surface-tension liquids.
For applications with very fine particles, we may recommend nano-fibre cartridges. They are rated MERV 15, meaning it captures 94% of dust particles sized from 0.3 to 1 micron.
